TAMAN NEGARA

Along with the rainforests of Sabah and Sarawak (Malaysian Borneo) Taman Negara is a veritable keystone of what makes Malaysia one of the 17 ecologically “Mega-Diverse” countries in the world.

In Malay, Taman Negara means National Park. This massive park encompasses three states (Pahang, Kelantan and Terrenganu). With its 4343 km2, Taman Negara is the oldest tropical rainforest in the world.

There are no lush resorts or 5-stars hotels in the Taman Negara area. However, you will be able to rest and spend the night in one of the authentic and typical chalet up on the hills.

You will have the chance to meet the local “Orang Asli”, reputed to be very friendly and lovely, and do take the time to visit their village as this aids in your plunge into the Taman Negara ambiance.

Taman Negara Highlights

Here are some of the best features of Taman Negara:

Taman Negara Jungle Trekking

A jungle trekking experience through the park is inevitable. There is an array of routes you can choose; both short and long, and there are trekking routes that can last up to nine days. To make the most of your adventure, and learn as much as possible from the wild surroundings, a guide must be taken along with you. While trekking, you will be delighted by all the natural opportunities encountered:

  • Lata Berkoh and Waterfall cascades
  • Canopy Walk
  • Cave exploration
  • Wildlife Hide. Recommended both during day and night. At night, the jungle is different, and you will enjoy for sure all the sounds and the wildlife music.
  • And so much more …

You can also choose to go off the beaten path, there is nothing wrong to wish to escape the touristy trails, but always with a guide.

Do not forget the right attitude to adopt while in the jungle:

  • How you are dressed is important. Try to wear jungle colored clothes, like green and brown colors. Flashy and bright colors make animals afraid, and the colour white irritates animals like boars or elephants. By following this simple rule already you will get to see more animals and birds. Do not forget the indispensable leech socks and repellent for insects.
  • One should never talk loudly in the jungle as silence is necessary if you want to have the possibility to catch sight of wildlife. The best time of the day to spot animals is at dusk and dawn.
  • Remember to be highly respectful of what surrounds you, do not litter the jungle and put all your trash in a plastic bag you will keep in your bag.
