While the Perhentian Islands consists of nine islands, only two are actually inhabited: Perhentian Kecil Island (“Small Island”) and Perhentian Besar Island (“Big Island”). They are located in the state of Terengganu, 21km from the coast. If you want to escape from the stress of fast cities and hectic work schedules, the Perhentian Islands is the perfect place to go. The activities are similar to those available on Tioman Island but the incomparable crystalline waters and the pure white sandy beaches are what render Perhentian islands so special.

The beaches here are renowned throughout the world for being some of the most beautiful beaches ever. Perhentian Besar Island has various types of resorts to cater for the varying traveler needs. Snorkeling and diving

The Perhentian Islands were made a Marine Park in 1994, thus the waters and the rich marine diversity are preserved. For a small amount of money, enjoy yourself with the good snorkeling available in the Perhentian Islands. For both snorkeling and scuba-diving, the clear waters are home to loads of colorful corals and fishes, and if you are lucky you will even see harmless sharks.   • Shark Point : You do not need to dive to see sharks in Shark point. This place is known to be the best place to observe the predatory creature
  • Teluk Pauh
  • Tanjung Basi : Be attentive and you may encounter turtles.

  • Tukas Laut
  • Tiger Rock : It is one of the most popular dive spot of the Perhentians. Barracudas and Black tip sharks are often seen there.

On Kecil island:

Long Beach

This renowned beach will amaze you with its white sand and pristine water. The snorkeling and the diving there are really astounding! If you are lucky you will see sea turtles, sharks, and raise your head to catch sight sea eagles. For the nightlife, there are a few bars along the beach that will guarantee you a good moment with their relaxed and laid back atmosphere. The magical surrounding and the local people reputed to be very friendly will leave you with unforgettable memories.

Coral Bay

It is the smallest beach on the island and is located only ten minutes from Long Beach. You can enjoy wonderful sunsets there. Underwater, it is the variety of coral that makes snorkeling here all the more worth it. Most of the trails on Perhentian Kecil start from Coral Bay – so this is an added reason to visit this stretch of beach.


On Besar Island:

Teluk Keke

Probably the most famous beach on this island. The sand here is powdery and warm, and this is topped off with eye-catching scenery.


Anecdotes
  • The word Perhentian means “Stopping point” in Malay. Once there, you will understand why.
  • As there are no roads, you will need to use water taxis to get from beach to beach. Also, there are no ATMs on the islands so make sure to have enough money for you trip in your pockets!
