Anecdotes
  • Langkawi means ‘reddish brown eagle’ in Malay and the 99 islands are home to thousands of sea eagles which you will see regularly
  • Many legends render Langkawi unique in several ways. The most narrated one is the Mashuri Legend. 200 years ago, a beautiful girl named Mashuri living on the island was accused of adultery. Despite her claiming for justice and innocence, she was tied to a tree and stabbed to death. She bled white blood, proving her innocence. In a last breath, she then cursed Langkawi for seven generations. The legend is deeply anchored in the local people’s beliefs; moreover they attribute Langkawi’s recent economic growth to the end of Mashuri’s curse. Her tomb, located in Kuah, has even become an important attraction on the island.
