CAMERON HIGHLANDS

Made internationally famous due to the disappearance of Jim Thompson here in the late 1960s, the Cameron Highlands has long been a sanctuary for holidaymakers: before air-conditioning was invented, colonials and expatriates of Kuala Lumpur and Singapore would come here to enjoy to the cool mountain air.

Cameron Highlands is one of the two famous hill resorts of Malaysia (the other being Genting Highlands). It is a place full of history and character. It was discovered by William Cameron, more than a century ago. British troops stationed in what was then British Malaya would rest there from time to time in the cool air, and the British colonists saw in this area a real potential for growing tea and vegetables.

The cool climate has a lot to do with that and is one of the good reasons that attract locals and tourists to Cameron Highlands. Indeed, the air is much fresher in the Cameron Highlands as it is situated from 1300 meters above sea level, and it will allow you to escape from the muggy heat of big crowded cities.

In addition, you will get to see wonderful views and sceneries of tea plantations, mossy forests, and farms as far as the eye can see. There are numerous attractions and the kindness of locals is unforgettable. As a result, it makes Cameron Highlands a perfect place for a romantic excursion (weddings often take place there) as well as an ideal spot for beautiful walks and sightseeing.

The Cameron Highlands comprises 8 towns: Brinchang, Tringkap, Ringlet, Tanah Rata, Bertam Valley, Kuala Terla, Kampung Raja and Blue Valley. Tanah Rata and Brinchang are the most developed and most of the resorts of the area are located there.

Cameron Highlands Highlights

Here are some of the best features of the Cameron Highlands:

Tea Plantations

Your trip would not be complete if you did not visit the famous Cameron Highlands tea plantations. They make Malaysia the largest tea producing region of Southeast Asia. Once there, you can visit the factories and learn about the tea making process.

There are also a few shops where you can buy tea leaves to bring souvenirs back home. Last but not least, you will enjoy sipping local tea, the famed Cameronian Tea, at the café, while looking at the outstanding tea plantations sceneries present. The most famous Tea Plantations in Cameron Highlands are the Boh Tea Plantation, the Sungai Palas Tea Plantation and the Cameron Valley Tea Plantation.

Walking/Trekking

A lot of walking trails are available, for everyone and every level of difficulty. You will have to be accompanied by a guide. Generally, the farms offer the self picking experience: you choose your own strawberries and buy them. It great fun for everybody especially for kids! If you have not been too greedy and still have some room in your stomach, do not miss all the other strawberry-based products: strawberry lassi, yoghurt, tea. Fruit lovers, do not go without it!
