Below are some of the best snorkelling and whitewater river destinations of Peninsular Malaysia (West Malaysia). For more information on watersports and whitewater rivers in Malaysian Borneo (East Malaysia) see:  Borneo Watersports, and Borneo Whitewater.

Snorkeling in Peninsular Malaysia

Malaysia is an ideal destination for snorkeling. On the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia you will find some of the best coral reefs in the South China Sea.

The most popular snorkeling spots are Tioman, Redang and Perhentian Islands. Their archipelagos are endowed with crystal clear waters and abundant marine life like turtles, rays, and many colorful fishes. The best period to go is from March to November. On the West Coast of Peninsular Malaysia, even though Langkawi is more popular for its beach and for being a duty free zone, it still offers enjoyable snorkeling.  For this you will want to snorkel in the Pulau Payar Marine Park, which is a short boat trip from Langkawi.

There also is Pangkor Island and Pangkor Laut. The shallow waters reserve nice coral reefs and lots of fish. The best period to go is from November to March.

White Water Rafting and Kayaking in Peninsular Malaysia

If you feel adventurous, give White Water Rafting or Kayaking a go. Depending on the level of difficulty, you will be exposed to great thrills and spills. The whole experience will leave you with an excellent souvenir. Peninsular Malaysia disposes of several rivers for white water rafting and kayaking.

Kampar River is located on the state of Perak. With about 14 rapids, this white water rafting is class I-III. It means that some of the rapids have small waves while some others require maneuvering and have bigger waves. But all in all, Kampar River is known to be a great destination for families who want to have fun.

Also in Perak state, Sungkai River provides fun and safe rafting for the entire family. It is more than suitable for beginners and those with no white water experience (needless to say as long as you can swim). In a more challenging level, you can go and do rafting at Slim River. The rapids there are pretty intense as it is a class III white water rafting. Hence, you need to have a bit of experience in matters of river boarding before doing it.

In the state of Selangor, “river junkies” will definitely get something out of the Selangor River rafting, considered to be the most popular of peninsular Malaysia. It is said that some of its rapids meet Olympic standards for whitewater kayaking, going from level 1 (very basic skills required) to level 4 (be prepared for considerable drops and sharp maneuvering).
